In 1987, SONY developed a brand-new recording technology and introduced a digital audio tape called Digital Audio Tapes (DAT). In terms of the sound sampling rate, compared to the 44.1kHz of CD, DAT can reach 48kHz, which can record closer to the real sound, becoming the top recording medium at the time. DAT is different from ordinary cassette tapes. It is smaller in size and needs to be used on DAT's exclusive recorder. In 1990, SONY launched the world's first DAT WALKMAN — TCD-D3, which made the DAT player lighter. Although expensive, it had also become a dreamy product pursued by many sound-conscious players.
